‘Taking back control’ – local fishermen given post–Brexit assurance

As we reported at the weekend Hastings MP Amber Rudd and local fishermen met with the Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, Michael Gove on Friday to discuss how the industry would be affected following Britain’s departure from the European Union.

Members of Hastings Fishermen Protection Society asked the Secretary of State questions about the Government’s white paper on fishing which was recently published at the beginning of the month.

When the UK leaves the EU in March next year, the UK will leave the Common Fisheries Policy and will control its own waters.

Ms Rudd and Mr Gove meet local fishermen last Friday.

Ms Rudd said: “Following this important meeting, it is nice to bring some good news to our local fishermen. As the MP for Hastings and Rye, I pressed the Secretary of State to confirm that the UK’s departure from the EU and from the disastrous Common Fisheries Policy will result in a dramatic increase in quota for our fishermen.”

Mr Gove said after the meeting: “Hastings has a fantastic fishing heritage and it was a privilege to hear first-hand the views of local fishermen. It is clear we share the same vision for a more profitable industry outside the European Union.

“I now encourage everyone involved in this important industry to respond to our white paper consultation. Together we will take back control of our waters and communities like Hastings will see the rewards.”

“This means fishing in our communities will become much more sustainable as our fishermen can fully take advantage of our position on the English Channel. I look forward to hearing more from the Mr Gove on how Government is listening to the concerns of our fishermen and I will continue to facilitate a dialogue between our fishing community and Government,” said Ms Rudd.
