Sixty years on The Stables is ‘stronger than ever’
There’s praise all round for the Stables Theatre’s performance of Philip King’s See How They Run which was on last week.
As The Stables celebrates its 60th anniversary a number of events are planned throughout the year, chairman Chris Lacey says The Stables is, “going stronger than ever!” and local MP Amber Rudd described it as “a local gem”.
Key events to mark the anniversary included last Friday’s gala night to coincide with the final performance of See How They Run.
June sees three separate events planned including a Diamond Jubilee lunch at Powder Mills Hotel near Battle on Sunday 16th and from June 17th to 30th there’s an American exchange visit from Drama Group Chicago Heights, further details of that are scheduled for inclusion in the theatre’s May to August issue of What’s On.
Plans are also well in hand to publish an illustrated book celebrating 60 years of life at the Stables Theatre
The Gala Evening performance of Philip King’s See How They Run directed by Jenny Wiles last week was hailed a huge success. The play is set during the height of World War II in a country vicarage and becomes increasingly chaotic.
Speaking after the performance, Ms Rudd said: “It was a delight… Clearly a lot of effort was put in by the actors, backstage crew, and staff which made the evening a success.
“It goes to show why the Stables Theatre has been running for such a long time and I look forward to seeing their continued success in the future.”
Amanda Colledge said after seeing the play: “A brilliant play, I saw it on the first night and enjoyed it immensely.” While Mark ward said: “Excellent performance. It was good to hear my wife laugh so much beside me. Well done everyone.”
The Stables Theatre, based at The Bourne in Hastings, was first rescued by the Old Hastings Preservation Society (OHPS) in 1952 when the building was threatened with demolition by the local council. The building was refurbished and the grand opening took place on June 16th 1959. Following several other refurbishments and additions, the Stables Theatre now regularly shows local and other theatrical productions.

A friend of mine in Hastings sent me the link relating to the Stables 60th anniversary. I was a member of the Stables from the mid 60s until the late 70s and I have many happy memories of the wonderful times spent with a fun loving bunch of enthusiatic young people guided and encouraged by Dick and Sybil Perkins. I was in a number of productions over the years – Our Town, Trelawney of the Wells, Boeing Boeing, Rope and several others. I was also in The Hollow which was featured in a BBC series called ‘Having a lovely time’ and featured the late lamented actor Ronnie Fraser. I was in the production of the Rivals when the Queen Mother opened the new art gallery. The piece has stirred many happy memories of one of the happiest phases of my life.
