Police need help to crack down on motorcycle thefts

Police have renewed calls for information concerning thefts or attempted thefts of motorbikes and mopeds in Hastings and St Leonards.

There’s been a recent spate of thefts and police say they want to make sure people know what to do if they see anything suspicious and say that anyone who sees anything suspicious, who recovers their stolen property or who may have mobile phone images, dash-cam or CCTV footage regarding such crimes should contact police immediately.

Sergeant Jo Seabridge, of the Hastings and Rother prevention team, says: “It’s vital that we are told as soon as possible in order to give us the best chance of intervening.

“For instance, we’re keen to hear of any unusual or increased comings and goings at garages associated with motorcycles. And we’d like to know if anyone sees bikes being loaded or carried aboard vans and pick-up trucks in circumstances that may strike them as being out of the ordinary – perhaps late at night.”

Any information can be reported online or by phoning 101, quoting Operation Jump. If a crime is in progress or appears imminent, dial 999 and ask for police.

Alternatively, details can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers via its website or by calling 0800 555 111.

  1. These are such a vulnerable vehicle to steal. A couple of men and a van ( sometimes with recovery signage on the side of it) and many of these vanish in less than 30 seconds. Those with a chain or ground anchor around a minute with the right cutters. Many become chopped up for parts to be sold in Europe. Others either get Cloned or Ringing then with a bike that is perhaps a Total Loss or dead. Spring and Summer months is when the thefts really rise as the fair weather riders are out more. Roughly eighty per cent never get recovered. In 2017 more bikes, scooters / mopeds were stolen than sold in the UK. That is how bad this problem is.
While you can fit a tracker to a bike now, the problem is they are easy to find and destroy.
Just no easy answer to this problem and doubt there ever will be.
And I hate to say bike thefts are not a police priority. All the victim will get is a Crime Reference Number to file a claim with their insurance company. Having said all that Insurance Fraud within this sector is not small when it comes to bikes
